In the early 1840's Frederick Catherwood and John Lloyd Stephens extensively explored many of the ruined cities of the ancient Maya. Catherwood's drawings complemented Stephens' text in his best-selling books Incidents of Travel in Central America and Incidents of Travel in the Yucatan. As they present the condition of the sites as they were seen in the 1840's they have proven a great help to Mayanists in renovation and reconstruction of certain areas of the Mayan cities. This particular drawing of the main temple at Tulum was not included in Stephen's works. It was published in Catherwood's own book of color lithographs in 1844.
