This reconstructed limes stone watchtower (Wp 1/68) at Hillscheid (Germany) is considered the most accurate reconstruction of a watchtower that stood on the Roman frontier in German territory. The stone towers were built around 150 CE and replaced earlier timber ones. They had three storeys and their entrance was at the level of the first floor. The stone towers had a square plan of 5m x 5m and were painted white with lime mortar to make thm visible for miles around.
