This edition uses the 1861 translation by James Legge (1815-1897) published as part of his The Chinese Classics collection and reissued in the monumental Sacred Books of the East series.

Confucius (551-479 BC) was a Chinese philosopher who greatly influenced Chinese society and thought. A renowned educator, politician and social philosopher, Confucius was the founder of Confucianism, a complex system of moral, social, political, and religious thought. He was born in 551 BC in the state of Lu in China and his teachings are still revered in Chinese culture today. Confucius was a highly influential figure in Chinese society and his teachings were based on the concept of “ren” – a virtue of kindness and respect for others. He is best known for his famous dictum, “Do not do unto others what you do not want done unto you”. His teachings focused on creating harmony in society through the practice of morality, justice, and proper social etiquette. He believed that people should treat each other with kindness, respect each other's rights, and strive to better themselves. Confucius was also an advocate for education and believed that knowledge and wisdom should be shared. He established a system of education to teach students how to think critically, be honest, and develop strong character. He also developed a set of principles for rulers to follow, including the concept of “rectification of names” – ensuring that people are given proper titles to reflect their roles in society. Confucius' teachings have greatly impacted Chinese culture and his philosophy continues to be an integral part of Chinese society. His teachings have also spread to other parts of the world and have influenced many other cultures. Confucius is recognized as one of the most influential figures in Chinese history and his legacy continues to shape and inspire people today.
