Seven Against Thebes: Myth and History (Aleksander's Antiquities) Paperback – October 5, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
To the heroes beneath the walls of Troy, the heroes of the Theban War were peerless and unattainable role models.
Diomedes, son of Tydeus, so prayed to his goddess Athena:
Hear me, o daughter of Zeus! Stand by me, as you had once stood by my father, divine Tydeus, when he went to Thebes!
And King Agamemnon jeered him:
Woe to thee, son of brave Tydeus, the horse-tamer! Why do you tremble with fear? Why do you glance around, looking for a route of escape? Your father Tydeus was not wont to retreat in fear when he led bronze-clad Argives against the walls of Thebes!
What was the Theban War? Who fought it? What remains of the Homeric epics which described it? What can archeology tell us?
Aleksander Krawczuk's books on Greece and Rome have shaped three generations of antique lovers in Europe.
They have been huge best-sellers because of their unassuming style: reading him feels like taking part in a pleasant chat after a nice dinner by the fireside, with a glass of sherry in hand.
His topics are important and may at first seem forbidding, but the good professor finds a way to talk about them in an unassuming way without dumbing them down in the process.

About the authors
I am 102 years old! Here is your conclusive proof that the study of antiquity prolongs your life! I am a professor at the Jagellonian University in Krakow and an author of over 30 books on the subjects of ancient Greece and Rome.
Polish literature is rich and very internationally-minded but little known in the West due to Cold War Era politics. It is my mission to bring to my English and American friends the best books they have never heard of: beautifully written commercial and critical successes, often international, but never until now seen in English.

Ancient Greece has always been out of my league (I’m a Roman history buff), feeling lost among to many myths and deities interfering with the mortal world, and I started reading this book as this was number one in the series of Aleksander Krawczuk translated to English, but looking forward to the later ones in the series concerning the Roman Empire.
But this book was amazing! I was sucked right into the plot as the author throws you right into the story, making it feel like it’s happening here and now and not a long time ago. And then he deftly weaves myths and politics into the story, showing us how ancient authors are influenced by the politics of their day, slowing unfolding the main story he started out with. And suddenly I found myself interested in the old myths of Ancient Greece, thanks to great storytelling and putting the past into context.
Looking forward to read the rest of his books.
The book doesn't have any introduction. The structure of the book is alternating between historical fiction and nonfiction. It struck me as an odd format. I think I would have preferred just one or the other.
The historical fiction centers around the Greek play "Seven against Thebes". Maybe if I was familiar with the plot of the play, the book would have been easier in the beginning. The play is set in the early Heroic Age previous to the Trojan War.
There is some discussion of excavations starting in the 19th century. The author expresses his opinion on how much of these myths may be based on some truth.
There are a lot of characters, both real and mythological, to keep track of. I was glad I read this on my kindle so it was easy to search earlier chapters.
Krawczuk adeptly merges myth and reality within the play, creating an experience that feels remarkably authentic. This authenticity owes much to Pinch's skillful translation of Greek and Roman mythology into a captivating narrative. The blend of history and storytelling, coupled with the presentation of myth, is executed masterfully. Reading "Seven Against Thebes," one feels akin to a time-traveler, bearing witness to the unfolding of mythical and historical personalities and narratives.

Seven Against Thebes is actually book one of a currently 5 book series up to Herod the King of Jews.
The work delves into mythology, the time of the Greek empire; struggles, trials, giving deeper understanding how they thought; what was important to them and how they prioritized things in life. The story aids us in understanding time and history as we move forward in time to our current society, government and lives today.
For me history is fascinating. I always say, to best understand where you are; you first have to understand where you were. This is only accomplished through understanding the history and its story. Events are only a moment of time, in a small place of a world where everything is happening.
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting more out of history than dates and single events. To understand changes throughout time that brought you the very world you live in from the places these people have been. Right now I personally look forward to The Last Olympiad, book two.

A wonderful journey from classical era Thebes to the Heroic Age of Mycenean heroes and legends. A great combination of history/story-telling and myth-presentation. You feel like a time-traveler watching, hearing, feeling the mythical and historic personalities and stories unfold.
A beautiful read.
