If you want to discover the captivating history of Attila the Hun, then keep reading...

In the popular imagination, Attila the Hun is among the most barbaric leaders ever. His warriors have the reputation of being ruthless, cruel, and bloodthirsty, as the Huns are believed to have been savages lacking any semblance of civilized culture.

The Huns raped and pillaged with abandon whenever the opportunity arose, and their raids into lands poorly protected by military outposts in the crumbling Roman Empire became legendary. The Huns under the command of Attila are thought to have been largely responsible for the collapse of the Roman Empire and the commencement of the Dark Ages in Europe.

The reputation of Attila and his people, the Huns, is at odds with reality. But examining the few historical records of his character and deeds reveal quite a different story. It is true that he was a calculating leader who was skilled at unleashing his fierce fighters when necessary. It is also recorded in history that he was a continual thorn in the side of the Romans. However, placed in historical context, Attila acted in ways that were common among leaders, both Roman and barbarian, in the first half of the 5th century. What is extraordinary about him were his uncanny abilities in negotiations with superior powers, his capacity for matching and exceeding his enemies in duplicitous behavior, and his successes as a military tactician on the battlefield.

In Attila the Hun: A Captivating Guide to the Ruler of the Huns and His Invasions of the Roman Empire, you will discover topics such as
  • The Origins of Attila and the Huns
  • The Wars of the Huns Before Attila
  • An Alliance Between the Huns and the Romans
  • Attila Attacks the Byzantines
  • Attila Attacks the Byzantines Again
  • Attila Foils a Byzantine Plot
  • Attila’s Diplomatic Strategy Evolves in the West
  • Attila Raids Gaul
  • Attila Raids Italy
  • The Disintegration of Attila’s Kingdom
  • And much, much more!

This book has enough detail to be interesting and is concise enough to not be boring. This book is short but then again there is not a whole lot of first hand history available. It is a nice touch by the author to describe his sources. This book is not a historical novel. I enjoyed this format very much.

Good overview of a chaotic era, you will need a notepad to keep track of the cast of characters and groups. It is amazing the effect of names Atilla and Hun have over 1500 years later.Check it out.

if you're like me the only thing I knew about Attila was he was some legendary bad-ass who
terrorized Europe from the asian steppes back in the day.
As it turns out he was a diplomat, strategic thinker, and consumate warrior who put the final
stake in the Roman Empire's crumbling heart.
Nicely written and well worth the read.

That history is written by the victors seems especially true for Attila and his people. This writer presents a different view of of the Huns as Roman empire declined .

This is an encompassing look at a fascinating man.
Although (of necessity due to the lack of written records of the time), there seems to be rather a lot of conjecture and assumptions.
The author likes to claim that the 'Vandals' were over-dramatised as the 'bad guys', but then details outlandish behaviour with the explanation that it was normal for the time.
Still - some intersting information of the times.

The man was sharp and shrewd. Also, the "barbarian" was more honest than the "civilized" people. Don't believe what the Catholic church says about Attila.

How violent society was during this period. Brute force was the winner, and most tried to stay out of the way when Attila went on his crusades…..

4.0 out of 5 stars A fair insight of Atilla's Mind, Life & Escapades
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 7, 2021
I did enjoy reading this book although I did feel a lot of Atilla's life is conjecture of what they have managed to derive from the limited information found about him and the Huns, I'm not saying what has been provided isn't interesting and based on information known and found from varied sources . No doubt Atilla was a a very clever tactician, herdsman and warrior and there is plenty of things to digest regarding how his people lived, the type of people they were, the importance of pillaging for status and treasure and their nature of fighting not for land but for these treasures. I have read a few of the captivating history books now and like all their books it is another worth reading if you wish to learn about our past, for me it had a bit of a feel of fact and myth but that may have been my interpretation. I'm pleased I read this though, it's broadened my knowledge once more.
