Freedom Braids Hardcover – Picture Book, September 10, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Gather the midnight strands,
tend the roots that gave you life,
weave hopes into pathways―
paths that lead you home.
Day after day, Nemy sows seeds, pulls weeds, and strips leaves in the sugarcane plantation where she is enslaved. But one night, she follows a woman called Big Mother to a hidden shack. There, she finds a group of women braiding each other's hair. But these are no ordinary braids. Hidden in each elaborate pattern is a secret―a message signaling their intent to flee and a map to guide them in their escape. Will the paths these courageous women weave bring Nemy to a new home where she can be free?
A picture book of love, liberation, and legacy inspired by the true story of enslaved African women in Colombia braiding maps to freedom.

Review
"Moses’ digitally rendered art . . . regenerates pain as a glow that leads Nemy to 'a new dawn.' . . . Nemy’s story leaves us to consider what a miracle it is that a body can grow the strands of her own survival, and what ingenuity it takes to comb and style a path to freedom."―The New York Times
"A poignant tale of courage and resistance and of long-standing cultural traditions."―Kirkus Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2024I knew there was something golden about this book and as I opened it up, my thoughts were confirmed. The rich language, the vivid images, the historical context. It’s all something to behold. Blessed to have my daughter read it & read it again & again. It’s perfect for the adult in your life, as well!!! 5 stars is not enough.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2024I’ve enjoyed reading this great book several times with my kids!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2024This beautifully illustrated, history-inspired picture book explores the experiences of enslaved Black women who created symbolic codes in hairstyles and created maps in each other's braids to help them escape slavery. The story comes from the perspective of a young girl, and it describes her experience of slavery, her admiration of the older women and their shared hair care rituals, and their break for freedom.
I found the ending confusing, but I understood it after I read the author's note and realized that this is set in South America. The note includes additional historical information and context, but it would have been helpful for the story to communicate a sense of place and setting. It's great to have a book like this set in South America, since most are set in the United States, but I wish that the author had made the location clear within the story.
I received a temporary digital copy through NetGalley, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
