The Mammoth Book of Celtic Myths and Legends (Mammoth Books) Paperback – May 10, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
Developed from an early oral storytelling tradition dating back to the dawn of European culture, this is one of the oldest and most vibrant of Europe's mythologies. From all six Celtic cultures - Irish, Scots, Welsh, Cornish, Manx and
Breton - Peter Berresford Ellishas included popular myths and legends, as well as bringing to light exciting new tales
which have been lying in manuscript form, untranslated and unknown to the modern general reader.
The author brings not only his extensive knowledge of source material but also his acclaimed skills of storytelling to produce an original, enthralling and definitive collection of Celtic myths and legends - tales of gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines, magical weapons, fabulous beasts, and entities from the ancient Celtic world.

Celtic heritage and thought it would be good to know about the legends of other lands. I found the stories very entertaining, so much so that could barely put the book down. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys stories of the old ways as I do.
This book is a compilation of retellings of Celtic myths, legends, and folktales. The book is broken up by region and covers Ireland, Man, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. I found his style enjoyable and easy to read but the structure of the Celtic style of storytelling is entirely left out. Those interested in this should look at his sources (which he discusses if not citing specifically).
The book makes good and light bedtime reading (perhaps what I call a light read might be different than others, but this is pretty light). The stories are generally suitable for reading to kids. It is a nice collection, but has very little value from a scholarly perspective.
Now I saw the page count on this book and I figured it would be a rather comprehensive overview of some traditional celtic mythology, and that is exactly what it was. In that respect the book was informative and entertaining, with just enough background history to allow just anyone old person (like me!) to get the general plot line of each myth and legend. However what i didn't expect upon purchasing this book is the density of this material. Many of the names of various characters were very similar or very long so it was often hard to keep track of who was who. Some kind of index with al the names would have been very helpful. Also, since I am not from Scotland nor have I ever been I was also very unfamiliar with the geography of where many of the legends took place.
So all in all I was very entertained by this book, and I also learned a lot about celtic mythology (which was my goal) but it was a struggle. I would not recommend this book for anyone other than readers who have a natural curiosity about the subject because you will definitely need it to get through parts of this book.
