Plato: Five Dialogues: Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, Meno, Phaedo (100 Copy Collector's Edition) Hardcover – November 26, 2019

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 61 ratings

Euthyphro is a Socratic dialogue whose events occur in the weeks before the trial of Socrates, between Socrates and Euthyphro. The dialogue covers subjects such as the meaning of piety and justice.

Apology is the Socratic dialogue that presents the speech of legal self-defense, which Socrates presented at his trial for impiety and corruption, in 399 bc. The dialogue is a defence against the charges of “corrupting the youth” and not believing in the gods in whom the city believes.

Crito depicts a conversation between Socrates and his wealthy friend Crito regarding justice, injustice, and the appropriate response to injustice. Socrates thinks that injustice may not be answered with injustice, and refuses Crito’s offer to finance his escape from prison.

Meno introduces Socrates’ positive ideas: the immortality of the soul, the theory of knowledge as recollection, the method of hypothesis, and, in the final lines, the distinction between knowledge and true belief.

Phaedo is one of Plato’s best-known dialogues. The philosophical subject of the dialogue is the immortality of the soul. It is set in the last hours prior to the death of Socrates.

This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

To my regret, I discovered that this book only contains three dialogues rather than the five in the title. The missing dialogues are euthyphro and Meno, the two I am most interested in. I belatedly learned that a previous reviewer had made the same complaint about the book.

This delivers exactly what it is supposed to, and it arrived promptly.
My one particular criticism is the cover: the image is mildly pixelated and probably ripped from google images.

I do really wish more people would read the dialogues of Socrates. They are short, funny, inspirational, clever, and utterly compelling to read. Not just for a student of philosophy, these dialogues are for anybody. Definitely 5 stars!

3.0 out of 5 stars Huge book size - not one for sitting in bed with

The book contents are fine and the pages are good quality with clear typeface of a decent size, but the book itself is massive and not really portable. You’re not taking this on the bus or train to read. You’ll get a smack for taking up too much room. It’s clear this is to keep costs down and maximise profit. A5 paper is more expensive than A4. By using this size they use fewer pages as well but it’s really cumbersome. If you don’t mind this then the book is great.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does not do what it says on the tin!

NOTE: this review is of the Grapevine India version of Plato's Five Dialogues

I bought this to read Euthyphro, only to find it did not contain it! It also did not appear to contain Meno, either, or a table of contents. As this was available for a negligible price, I don't want to be overly harsh, but other readers looking for these will be disappointed if they purchase this version.
