The Ark of the Covenant in Its Egyptian Context: An Illustrated Journey invites readers on a journey of discovery that will change the way they view the Ark of the Covenant forever!

Although much has been written about the Ark of the Covenant, few authors engage the wealth of information available that pertains to Egyptian material culture. The Ark of the Covenant in Its Egyptian Context: An Illustrated Journey is the first book to explore the complex history of sacred ritual furniture in Egypt that predated the ark by hundreds of years.

Within Egyptian culture, over four hundred examples of ritual furniture exist that shed light on the design and appearance of the ark. These examples form patterns that provide context for the Israelites’ understanding of the ark at the time of its construction. That understanding would have been obvious to the Israelites of the time, but has since become obscured over the millennia. This groundbreaking book is the first to connect the Ark of the Covenant with the archaeology and chronology of ancient Egypt, and it does so in an accessible way with straightforward text and dozens of full-color photographs and graphics.

Key points and features:
  • A groundbreaking work of scholarship―the first of its kind to connect the Ark of the Covenant with its ancient Egyptian context.
  • High-level scholarship is paired with straightforward text, making it an accessible volume for students and curious laypeople, as well as experts in the field.
  • Includes dozens of full-color photographs and graphics depicting ancient Egyptian artifacts and art.
  • Durable hardcover is built to withstand heavy use in classrooms and libraries.

I found Dr. Falk via Inspiring Philosophy and the debate on that channel against Kennedy about the Date of the exodus and I was blown away by his knowledge and defenestration of Kennedy. I went on to watch many of his YOUTUBE Videos and and livestreams and am impressed by how he interacts and reacts to all sorts of questions and comments either grace. patience, logic, erudition, humor, and I would add, love for God's word and love for what is true. Dr. Falk's book here is particularly great in that it conveys concisely much of what I've heard him say along with beautiful photography of sites and artifacts that illustrate the context of the ark of the covenant. The concurrence of various attributes of the ark and their alignment with a certain period in Egyptikn history were both fascinating and Bible affirming. There is so much beauty and inspiration in Egypt it is clear why God used much of their art and concepts to help illustrate positively Himself ad well ad a good dose of via negativa to show the stark contrast. I've been geeking out a out this author and his work since I found him a few weeks ago and hope more can find the blessed work that is so wonderfully portrayed in this gem of a book. To call it a coffee table book would be insulting unless you believe your coffee table should have books that are beautiful and not just
fluff.

When you first take it out of the box, it is a very attractive book. It looks like a great conversation piece. It looks like something you would want to have out on display. When you open it up, you notice the beautiful photography. You can’t miss it. You can see a great deal of work was put into this book. The book intersperses interesting stories with scholarly insights. All the while, it really makes the information accessible to the layperson without compromising scholarly rigor. In all, I would highly recommend this book.

What an amazing book. It is rare to get an erudite scholar to condescend to the layman level and communicate the concepts in an easily understandable way. The original photography helps to convey these concepts. The book gives a brief argument for the “late date” of the Exodus. Then gives a comprehensive history of temple furniture. Lastly, the book shows how the Ark of the Covenant evolves out of the Egyptian context that the Israelites lived in, and were shaped by. The are some other interesting contributions to the book 📖. Like an imaginative tale of the daily life of a temple furniture builder, but not just any furniture builder, the builder of the biblical Ark of the Covenant. Definitely a great book to add to your collection.

What a delightful book. I'm a rabbi with a master's degree in Hebrew literature, I teach Bible to undergraduate students at a state university, and I love all dead cultures. I received this book and found it so compelling that I read it in a single afternoon. Dr Falk does the magnificent job of streamlining the complex subject for the general reader without sacrificing important intellectual frameworks or important conceptual tools. It's one of those deep dives into what seems to be a relatively small subject, the role of boxes in Ancient Egyptian culture, and reveals it to be a subtle and multifaceted subject. The one thing the reader needs to realize is the Dr. Falk is first and foremost in Egyptologist (I studied with a lot of devout Assyriologists), and truth be told, the ark of the covenant is by and large and afterthought in this book. He is drawing very important cross-cultural observations regarding the Ark, and I can honestly say that I learned new things, but it's clear that his first love, his true love, is Egyptology in itself.

Dr Falk’s dive into the historical and cultural context of one of the most famous objects of the ancient world is a engaging and informative read that will leave the reader with a much greater understanding of the way the Israelite religion and it’s customs was greatly influenced by the Egyptian culture it emerged from. Even if you yourself are not a believer in God or the Bible, I still highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about ancient near eastern history and culture.

I found the title intriguing and the general subject interesting, but unfortunately I would not recommend this short book (and its rather high price). The author has his own unique dates/chronology for various Pharaohs and Mesopotamian kings that do not agree with any standard chronologies, spends much of chapter 1 arguing for his personal view of the biblical Exodus, often writes in a style as if addressing children, and there are some mistakes in the book. In the epilogue the author asks the question of where is the ark today and summarizes some historical information, even including the legendary Ethiopia hypothesis, but inexplicably fails to even mention the reference to the alleged fate of the ark in 2 Maccabees. The book then ends with this ridiculous quote: "Where is the ark today? A small piece of it may be on your finger."

Dr. Falk is an expert in Egyptology and the Bible and his well-researched book on both is insightful, educational, and interesting. The book is full of photos of archaeological findings and images from his travels to the Near East, which really help to bring context to his message. His book also helps to debunk modern scholarly notions such as the Documentary Hypothesis by demonstrating the ancient Egyptian context of the first five books of the Bible. Fascinating book.

This is a great read. It must be understood that the Israelites lived in Egypt for several hundred years. They would have been very familiar with Egyptian culture, deities, and religious practices. When Yahweh brought them out of Egypt and took them to Sinai, He would have used their experiences in Egypt to teach them about Himself. Dr. Falk does a great job leading the reader by the hand and teaching how the Egyptian pantheon, religious practices, and religious furniture influenced the Israelites and helped them learn how Yahweh was different from these other deities. This book includes over 100 pictures and charts. A must read for anyone interested in Egypt or The Exodus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, structured and transparent

Illustrated journey indeed! The book is beautiful. The photographs are not only exquisite but also useful in explaining the points being made. The book provides a lot of very detailed information of seemingly minor design elements of each type of furniture covered and the illustrations are very helpful. That said I often paused my reading just to spend some time with them and had to force myself to read all of the text before turning the page. The knowledge and work behind each photograph are both equally impressive.

The text is easy to understand even for me as a layman reader with a casual interest. The well structured approach simplifies accessing the information and makes it easy to use the book as reference literature. Everything within it is where one would expect it and the approach of the author is very consistent and orderly throughout the volume. Every new term is explained, every new person is showed in his or her context to facilitate for the reader.

Since the author is an Egyptologist one would expect careful use of sources and indeed there are plenty of notes either containing a reference to a source or some additional information so albeit not surprising it does lend additional credibility to the book as well as facilitating taking an even deeper dive into some detail.
The book is by no means inexpensive but well worth its price given the amount of work behind it.
Dr Falk slowly and surely builds his case for the connections in time and space between the Ark and Egypt but I would have wanted more on ritual furniture from Caanan or other possibly relevant contexts, if so only to dismiss their influence.

On this journey we readers catch glimpses of how life, death and beyond was like in ancient Egypt. A benefit of making this kind of deep dive, even as a layman, is that it offers a chance to experience objects and practices not often displayed elsewhere. Objects and practices that we as humans can connect to regardless of the distance in time, space and outlook on life. For me personally that process only works when the illustrations are this good.
