The Ark of the Covenant in Its Egyptian Context: An Illustrated Journey Hardcover – Illustrated, December 1, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Although much has been written about the Ark of the Covenant, few authors engage the wealth of information available that pertains to Egyptian material culture. The Ark of the Covenant in Its Egyptian Context: An Illustrated Journey is the first book to explore the complex history of sacred ritual furniture in Egypt that predated the ark by hundreds of years.
Within Egyptian culture, over four hundred examples of ritual furniture exist that shed light on the design and appearance of the ark. These examples form patterns that provide context for the Israelites’ understanding of the ark at the time of its construction. That understanding would have been obvious to the Israelites of the time, but has since become obscured over the millennia. This groundbreaking book is the first to connect the Ark of the Covenant with the archaeology and chronology of ancient Egypt, and it does so in an accessible way with straightforward text and dozens of full-color photographs and graphics.
Key points and features:
- A groundbreaking work of scholarship―the first of its kind to connect the Ark of the Covenant with its ancient Egyptian context.
- High-level scholarship is paired with straightforward text, making it an accessible volume for students and curious laypeople, as well as experts in the field.

The text is easy to understand even for me as a layman reader with a casual interest. The well structured approach simplifies accessing the information and makes it easy to use the book as reference literature. Everything within it is where one would expect it and the approach of the author is very consistent and orderly throughout the volume. Every new term is explained, every new person is showed in his or her context to facilitate for the reader.
Since the author is an Egyptologist one would expect careful use of sources and indeed there are plenty of notes either containing a reference to a source or some additional information so albeit not surprising it does lend additional credibility to the book as well as facilitating taking an even deeper dive into some detail.
The book is by no means inexpensive but well worth its price given the amount of work behind it.
Dr Falk slowly and surely builds his case for the connections in time and space between the Ark and Egypt but I would have wanted more on ritual furniture from Caanan or other possibly relevant contexts, if so only to dismiss their influence.
On this journey we readers catch glimpses of how life, death and beyond was like in ancient Egypt. A benefit of making this kind of deep dive, even as a layman, is that it offers a chance to experience objects and practices not often displayed elsewhere. Objects and practices that we as humans can connect to regardless of the distance in time, space and outlook on life. For me personally that process only works when the illustrations are this good.
