Author Jake Klim chronicles the attack from the first shell fired to the aftermath and celebrates the resilience of Orleans at war.

On the morning of July 21, 1918--in the final year of the First World War--a new prototype of German submarine surfaced three miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The vessel attacked an unarmed tugboat and its four barges. A handful of the shells fired by the U-boat's deck guns struck Nauset Beach, giving the modest town of Orleans the distinction of being the only spot in the United States to receive enemy fire during the entire war. On land, lifesavers from the U.S. Coast Guard launched a surfboat under heavy enemy fire to save the sailors trapped aboard the tug and barges. In the air, seaplanes from the Chatham Naval Air Station dive-bombed the enemy raider with payloads of TNT.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Like many war stories, the 1918 attack on Nauset Beach in Cape Cod was tucked away in the dusty archives of history. In Attack on Orleans, Jake Klim skillfully resurrects this harrowing battle in an action-packed page-turner about ordinary Americans whose extraordinary bravery has earned them a place alongside America's most celebrated heroes."

--John McCain

About the Author

Jake Klim was born and raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, just twenty miles from the village of Orleans. As a child, he had read snippets about the attack on Orleans in local periodicals, but always wanted to know the full story. Thus began a lifelong fascination with American history. Today he is a television producer and writer based in North Bethesda, Maryland. He has worked on productions for History Channel, the Military Channel, National Geographic Channel and WILD, among many others.

I grew up in this town, and my father was a police sergeant there. I had not really heard much about this incident while growing up. I do remember doing a history project for school, where I interviewed an older gentleman who was a boy during the attack in this book. He witnessed the entire event. I wish I still had the recording of that interview.... but it was probably 35 years ago. The book was great! The author did a stellar job of finding primary sources, and the photos which he put in the book were awesome. I couldn't have asked for more. This is a solid 5 star account of an interesting event from World War I.

As someone who lived on the Cape for a few years, it came as a surprise to discover the history behind the first attack on US soil since the war of 1812 happened in Orleans.

It’s not a lengthy windy book like some historical nonfiction tend to be. The author kept it simple and to the point with eyewitness accounts and journal entries. It turned out better than expected.

Well worth the read if you ever stay on the cape.

This book is a fascinating and well-researched account of the only attack on the U.S. shores during the last year of World War I. On a quiet and muggy Sunday morning, the tug Perth Amboy was headed south along Cape Cod, towing four barges. Vacationers relaxed on the beach and the porches of the cottages. Around 10:30am, the quiet calm was shattered by the thunderous roar of shells as the German sub U-156 opened fire on the tug. The submarine had already destroyed American and Allied vessels, including the USS San Diego off the coast of Long Island, killing a number of sailors. Although the Perth Amboy and her barges were of no particular value to the war effort, the captain of the U-156 had decided they were fine targets. Two of the tug's crew were seriously injured. The sub then began firing on the barges, as the people on board frantically scrambled into their lifeboats to escape. At the nearby Orleans Coast Guard Station, the life-savers headed out to the rescue in their surfboat. Author Jake Klim tells us the entire story from the points of view of many of the folks who were a part of this historic moment. He takes us from the beach and the cottages, to being on board the vessels and even up into the lookout tower at the Coast Guard Station. His research is amazingly thorough and his narrative compelling and smooth. There are lots of photos as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the United States, World War I, maritime history or the history of the U.S. Life-Saving Service and the U.S. Coast Guard. Even if you are not a history buff, you will still enjoy this exciting true story!

When I visited Rome I remember walking on the streets and stumbling upon ruins centuries old, resting there silently amidst the new world with little trace of the icons they used to be. Reading The Attack on Orleans felt like a similar discovery. I have visited the Cape Code area many times without knowing its place in American and WWI history, and now I am glad that I know more thanks to this book.
The story really takes off for me during Chapter 4 with the attack on the Perth Amboy; from here the action is non-stop. Klim’s exhaustive research is evident in the amount of details provided both of the action at sea as well as of the town’s people who were going about their daily life before witnessing the attack. It really is like being in twenty places at once and feeling all the emotions that everyone felt in their own capacity.
The most maddening part for me in the book was the Mark IV Bombs! With each successive attempt I could feel Lingard, Shields, and Shilling’s frustrations mounting and in fact I wanted to scream on their behalf. The most emotional part of course was seeing Lingard and his buds on the sinking “flying boat” still full of comradery and patriotism.
For what it’s worth, the book also made me think of how things have changed when it comes to how news travels. All in all I highly recommend this book. It is a quick read not just for the history buff but also for those who like stories of epic adventure.

OK so I actually know the author. However it is a well written book that holds your interest from start to finish. I have lived on Cape Cod for over 40 years and did not know any of this story. A lot of research went into this book but it does not come across like a history text book. It is a great story about some heroic people on Cape Cod during a war that many have forgotten.
