Full of humor, heart, and hilarious high jinks, Martian Ghost Centaur is a touching story about protecting the things you love and following your passion.

The town of Southborough used to be a major tourism destination, drawing folks from all over in the hopes they’d spot the famous Sasquatch, reportedly seen in the town many times over the years. But it’s been ages since anyone’s spotted the ‘squatch, and tourism is starting to dry up. A tech company called Start-up.com (a start-up that helps people start their own start-ups) decides to begin buying up places all over town in order to build their techie headquarters, driving out all the local townspeople. Luckily, Southborough is also home to Louie O’Connor, firm believer in the Sasquatch’s existence and all-around, mega ’squatch fan.

When Louie’s dads’ restaurant, Squatch Burger, starts to go under and fall prey to the techie start-up, Louie and her best friend Felix decide they’ll do whatever it takes to save the town from losing all the people and places that make it special. In hopes that convincing people the Sasquatch is real and to drive back tourism, Louie and Felix plan an elaborate hoax in hopes of saving the town from the dot-com takeover. But when Felix starts talking about leaving their hometown for college in LA, Louie will have to face some tough questions about herself, her future career, and her place in her beloved hometown.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Seventeen-year-old Louie O'Connor loves her hometown, the once thriving, now dying tourist destination of Southborough, CA. Before Louie was born, a Sasquatch sighting attracted visitors, but enthusiasm has waned, and techie Leef Smith swoops in, eager to take advantage of the cheap land to build his start-up headquarters. Louie fears for her community, especially her parents' restaurant, Squatch Burger, where she works, so she and her best friend, Felix, team up to introduce a new creature that's sure to draw attention; along the way, she learns important lessons as she feuds and then makes up with Felix and realizes that her Squatch Burger job doesn't define her. Louie is white, Felix is Latinx, and there are numerous BIPOC secondary characters; the story also offers queer representation via multiple same-sex couples, including Louie's fathers. Time lapses are generally conveyed through text boxes, but some transitions are unlabeled and rushed, and pacing can be uneven. Still, the distractions don't detract from the narrative, and clever jokes and cultural references from the past two decades are sprinkled throughout. Basic color block backgrounds focus on the highly expressive and comedic character reactions, giving the tale a playful feel as it leads to the reveal of the titular character. VERDICT Readers will appreciate this campy adventure that has touches of "Scott Pilgrim" and "Lumberjanes" and ends on a valuable message about maintaining boundaries between work and identity.-Alea Perez, Elmhurst P.L., ILα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

"Martian Ghost Centaur makes me want to visit Southborough, grab a meal at Squatch Burger and hang out with all the characters because it's so charming and heart-warming." -- Yehudi Mercado (Sci-Fu)

"Readers will appreciate this campy adventure that has touches of
Scott Pilgrim and Lumberjanes and ends on a valuable message about maintaining boundaries between work and identity." ― School Library Journal

"[...] This fun story has something for everyone, including thinly veiled '90s pop-culture references, matter-of-fact LGBTQ+ representation, and small town heart, and high-spirited, passionate Loui, who's angry about the opportunistic take-over of her town, is a lively protagonist. Hand to fans of
Lumberjanes or The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl." ― Booklist

I like the length of the book, something you can sink your teeth into. The storyline and characterizations are good. The illustration is done well, establishing a certain style. The bonus "Character Sketches" is interesting to see. Relevant for grade school kids in 2021.

I would definitely pick this up during my heavier reads. I really like the small atmosphere and the methods that characters used to save the town. It was also a nice read for discovering your passion and where you want to go in life. I love the art style

This took me back to the things I love about small town life. The community the author built was wacky, humorous, and believable - including the reality that most small town parents really do know that their kids drive out to secret parties in the woods.

While minors drinking at a party will keep me from putting this in my 5th grade class library, it won’t stop me from recommending it to older Graphic Novel lovers. The art was fantastic and the story was not only entertaining, it offered often overlooked ideas about following your passions.

A delightful graphic novel that focuses on belief, friendship, and a sense of home. While intended for a younger audience, it is still quite enjoyable for adults.

The artwork is really fun and bright which sets the tone of the book well. I loved the character designs and the characters themselves are a wonderfully diverse group of creative weirdoes. I love the quirky town, it’s a great setting and really brings together. I enjoyed the story line; it was interesting how the book showed the influence of cell phones and social media on the cryptid myths. I also thought the story had a great overall message about finding your passion and following your dreams. All around it is a really fun and well done book.

A cute story about a teenage girl named Louie who's small town of Southborough in California is famously known for sightings of Bigfoot. Sadly, with new technology and less sightings, the town is loosing its tourism and being bought out by big tech. It's up to Louie to save her town and her parent's business from going under.

I enjoyed the art and the storyline was fun, but it seemed a bit superficial. Louie is supposed to be a senior in high school and acts a lot younger than she is. To me, the whole story seemed like it was written by a middle schooler who is portraying what they think high school would be like. That aside, it was fun and silly enough for me to enjoy.

'Martian Ghost Centaur' with story and art by Mat Heagerty is about a martian ghost centaur eventually, but it's a graphic novel with a lot of heart along the way.

Louie lives in Southborough, home of a Sasquatch sighting years ago. Her two dads own a burger place with a signature burger and her best friend Felix lives in the town. Then things start to change. A tech startup wants to buy up the town and the Sasquatch sighting is debunked on tv. As Louie watches her friends leave and her family business failing, she has to find a plan to fix things.

This was a fun story with fun art. The title doesn't really make a lot of sense for the majority of the story, but it will eventually, and it is a catchy title.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Oni Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I really was excited to read Martian Ghost Centaur because it sounded so good, and I really did enjoy it. This was another cute graphic novel. I really loved the colorful cartoon-like artwork and the story was so much fun. The characters were all diverse and interesting. I loved the friendship between the main characters, Louie and Felix. This is definitely a graphic novel that I would buy to read again.
