Myths and Legends of Ancient Greece and Rome Paperback – Illustrated, May 3, 2013

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 352 ratings

Mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient people, concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world, and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. It was a part of the religion in ancient Greece and is part of religion in modern Greece and around the world, known as Hellenismos.

Modern scholars refer to and study the myths in an attempt to throw light on the religious and political institutions of Ancient Greece and its civilization, and to gain understanding of the nature of myth-making itself.

I was taking a Greek Myth class and I loved having this book to refer to. It's an easy read and very thorough. The book the instructor was using was very expensive and was so detailed that even he kept saying that he had trouble understanding parts of it. You'll like this one if you like the Greek mythological tales.

In this book, E.M. Berens provides an excellent account of the mythological deities and stories from Ancient Greek and Roman mythology (much more the former than the latter), as well as a superb comparative analysis of the mythologies of the two civilizations. The insight he brings through the details he gives is not to be underestimated. Over 160 Notes & Highlights have been made by me during the course of my reading this novel, much of which were either marks on profound excerpts I found striking or notes on variations in the myths told in the book. Regarding the latter, Berens admittedly tells a single, central version of each myth and seldom digresses to mention the other variations that have become so popular in the tales. Despite this, Berens weaves a solid story for each myth and accurately recounts the best-known myths of each immortal and hero.

Being someone who has read multiple versions of each tale in numerous books, I expected to grow bored quite swiftly with the work; however, I soon found myself intrigued and my interest piqued at the information he provides. That being said, I recommend to anyone who enjoys Greco-Roman mythology this book regardless of whether he or she is already familiar with the age-old tales. Lastly, the only reason for my four-star rating instead of higher is because the format of this literary piece, being the public domain book that it is, was distracting and the images (which I believe was a part of the original book) were disappointingly absent. Other than those minor complaints, however, this is definitely a book worthy of serious consideration and perusal.

It is a very good book for ages 10-15 if you want to learn about Greece and Rome. I wouldn't recommend it for ages 9 and under. It has its good points and then not so good points in the story. Me myself enjoyed reading it but some of the parts are sad and then some points are really happy.

If you are into myths it is an OK read. Good information, kind of dry reading, not for the child or teenager reader.

Nice introduction to Greco-Roman Mythology. Concise with just enough information. Enjoyable for those who what to get a basis in the Greco-Roman mythology. The e-text functions properly and you can change the font size without chasing the text clear out of view. Unfortunately, this e-edition does not show a link to the TOC in the go to window. If you go to the beginning and backspace you find an interactive TOC with usable links. Unfortunately, the link does not quite get you to the chapter you are looking for.

This book is exactly what I wanted it to be. It tells about the Greek and Roman gods and goddesses in a manner that is both interesting and concise. I would recommend it to anyone as it is easy to read and well written.
