Although Israel was dominant for most of the time the kingdoms of Israel and Judah coexisted, it has remained in Judah s shadow in both the Hebrew Bible and consequently in the attention of modern scholarship. This book presents the first comprehensive history of the northern kingdom and description of the archaeology of northern Israel from the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1350 B.C.E.) until the kingdom's fall in 720 B.C.E. and beyond. It tells the story of the northern kingdom primarily in its formative phases. The narrative is based in archaeology and makes use of the most updated field research, with the addition of what is known from ancient Near Eastern and biblical texts. Finkelstein's thirty years of fieldwork in sites related to the northern kingdom have paved the way for a new understanding of the history and archaeology of ancient Israel.

I am a long time fan of Finkelstein's work and appreciate his approaches to a better understanding of the history of Israel. Finkelstein focuses on the archaeology first and if it complements any Biblical texts, then that is even better. He does not approach the topic the other way around which sadly has been the method of choice since archaeology was first conceived. The only reason why archaeology became what it is today was to prove the Bible true (that is after the treasure hunting phase).

With that in mind, he provides the reader with clearer dates (mostly based on radio carbon methods and extra-biblical sources) on settlement layers of various northern locations. It becomes clear that the northern empire reached each peak as far north as Aram and into Aramean Damascus territory, as far south into Judah, and also as far southeast and into Moab during the Omride dynasty. This is when commerce and general trade took off making this dynasty the most influential of the time. Manufacturing wines, oils, to even training/exporting Egyptian (Nubian) horses.

Prior to the Omrides, we can see evidence of cult places established at Shiloh and Bethel until eventually centralized in Samaria. During the Omride dynasty, writing started to take off and eventually showed up generations later to the south (Judah). During this time of Israelite glory, Judah was not as populated. This didn’t occur until the Neo-Assyrians swept through and the Israelite refugees migrated south.

It was then that an identity for the children of Israel came to be. And while there is no reason to doubt a Davidic king since, archaeology has shown that the Judahite monarchs come from the House of David but a Unified Monarchy under the leadership of David & Solomon and ruled from Jerusalem would not have been likely. It was more likely that Omri and Ahab served as a model for this.

Finkelstein then focuses on the most likely stories from the Pentateuch that would have survived from Israel and into Judah to later be redacted and canonized into the books we have come to know today.

I did enjoy this book and for those that enjoy this kind of stuff, I highly recommend it.

Finkelstein's interpretation of the available archaeology is certainly outside the mainstream of biblical archaeologists, and his book may not accurately reflect the history of the Israelites (I don't know whose interpretation does), but he knows how to write about a difficult subject matter and hold your attention. It's up to the reader to judge, after reading other alternative interpretations (and there are many) of the history of Israel and Judah and Canaan, whether or not you want to accept some of his theories as potentially factual. You don't have to agree with all or any of his book to enjoy a good read. If you haven't picked up the Bible lately, you may even be stirred to read the books of Kings and Chronicles. It couldn't hurt!

This is not a general reader's book. In the absence of the author's usual co-author, Neil Silberman, Finklestein has produced a fact-dense, information-rich text which brings much light to the history of ancient Israel. But he does so in stiff, stilted prose, often using archaeological terminology that is beyond the reach of many general readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rational view of Ancient Israel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 3, 2015
A clear, concise and very readable overview of our current understanding of Biblical archaeology written by a hands on expert. It should be required reading for any who still try to warp and corrupt the Ancient History of the Near East by an irrational belief in the literal truth of Solomon and all his glories. There is also a message for Egyptologists that Shishak does not necessarily equal Shoshenk I. I was particularly impressed by a rationalisation of the person of Saul, it was an object lesson in how the Hebrew Myths and Legends can be legitimately allied with archaeology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Elucidation of Old Testament Enigmas

Fascinating book. It is a shame the maps are not better, it would make things easier for the non-expert reader. For anyone who has puzzled over the origins of the Old Testament this book is a very enlightening read, as is 'The Bible Unearthed'. Quite amazing how much diligent archaeology, science and intelligent and knowledgeable interpretation can discover.
