John Foxe's groundbreaking chronicle of Christian saints and martyrs put to death over centuries remains a landmark text of religious history.

The persecution of Christians was for centuries a fact of living in Europe. Adherence to the faith was a great personal risk, with the Roman Empire leading the first of such persecutions against early Christian believers. Many were crucified, put to the sword, or burned alive - gruesome forms of death designed to terrify and discourage others from following the same beliefs.

Appearing in 1563, Foxe's chronicle of Christian suffering proved a great success among Protestants. It gave literate Christians the ability to discover and read about brave believers who died for expressing their religion, much as did Jesus Christ. Perhaps in foretelling, the final chapter of the book focuses upon the earliest Christian missions abroad: these, to the Americas, Asia and other locales, would indeed see many more martyrs put to death by the local populations.

Foxe's Book of Martyrs caused controversy for condemning the Catholic Church for its persecution of Protestant sects it had branded heretical. To a great extent, Foxe's thesis embodies the rebellious outrage that fueled the upheaval of the established order in the 16th century. It galvanized Protestant beliefs and served as a grim reminder of the injustices those divergent from Catholicism had faced in earlier centuries.

Critics would, over the years, attempt to discredit Foxe's work by pointing out perceived inaccuracies or falsehoods - despite their efforts, the Book of Martyrs' influence did not wane. Modern academics however, in reviewing Foxe's sources and performing a close analysis of the Book of Martyrs, concluded that he was a credible scholar whose output was a worthy and valuable contribution to Christian literature. The English historian Patrick Collinson concludes:

"Foxe helped to shape the controversy along historical and prophetic lines, rather than epistemological or linguistic ones."

This is not Foxe's Book of Martyrs
This book was not written by John Foxe. John Foxe died in 1587, yet this book includes many events which occurred after this date. These include: the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685), trial of Galileo (1633), and the life of John Wesley (born 1703). In the attached picture, you can see many places, people, and dates which could not have existed at the time this book was published.

I liked the print size in this book! It’s a great read and quite interesting (sad but empowering) for what’s coming in this world. History tends to repeat itself. 😑

The book speaks for itself. It is a simple, readable account of the many martyrs for the faith up to the author's time. Fox was a man converted from Catholicism to Protestantism, and expelled from Oxford because of it. His last edition was some 2000 pages long and very famous in this time. In 1900 or so, it was abridged and the language was modernized by WB Forbush, which, with few changes is this edition.

The font is clear and readable and large for this edition. The short biography at the front is very helpful. I highly recommend this edition. As the writer of Hebrews wrote (probably referring to Paul's and Peter's martyrdom), "Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever" Heb 13:7-8 NIV. Our leaders exemplify our Lord's sacrifice for us. They pass on, but he always remains for us to trust in.

Interesting book but I only read a little at a time. Need to digest this one. It does make a person think about how Christian’s we’re persecuted.

There are times in our lives when we come across a person, song or book that changes the way we see the world. This is one of those singular books that will change the way you see the world and the people in it.

True, the book contains very VERY difficult material but the stories of lives of the martyrs courage in the face of such persecution is inspiring and deeply thought provoking.

This book WILL, if you let it, change your life.

If you're a bible believing Christian, and you haven't read Foxes book of Martyrs, buy a copy and read it now. You will begin to understand the scripture that says, " They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him.." The man of sin and his church fulfill this in slaughtering innocent Christians and Jews(including old people, women, and children) or anyone who refuses the wafer god, deny the authority of the Pope, or preach justification by faith in Jesus Christ alone. You should also obtain "Tortured for Christ" by Richard Wurmbrand. Find "The Two Babylons" by Hislop, and "50 years in the church of rome" by Father Chiniquy.

A must read for every believer to understand the heights of suffering our predecessors had to go through for standing for the precious faith we have today.

This edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs one of the best modern ones out there that does not compromise on content from the original text. The book is of good quality and totally worth the money.

I only bought this book as a reference, as I'm reading for a History Degree. I'm finding it somewhat boring, and am only glad I'm not a Roman Catholic, else I'd be having nightmares over some of the text.
