From a bastard birth and anarchy in his early years as Duke, William the Conqueror overcame personal and political obstacles to forge Western Civilization. As the first Norman King, he laid the foundation for the separation of church and state, established juries as part of the judicial system, and his practical policies inspired the English language. William bound the fate of the English isle to the European continent and gave birth to the British aristocracy. His personal charisma and manipulation of both his peers and the masses make his reign still relevant today.“The Last Battle” is William’s story. This historically accurate novelization tracks the growth of conscience in a brutal warrior. The first king of modern England, William I, was crowned on Christmas Day, 1066. His coronation was a turning point in world history.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Battle: The Life of William the Conqueror by Ed Sharrow. It's a magnificent time-travel back to the 11th Century. I felt like I witnessed the illegitimate beginnings of the man who would shape the scope of Western Civilization for all - King William I. From his childhood training and education in the Court of King Henry I of France, to his rise to power as the Duke of Normandy, and his ascension to the throne of what he would call England, I got to know the intimateness he held with his family, the constant struggles for loyalty with those close to him, and his devotion to create an Empire. The Last Battle is definitely a "best read" for anyone interested in history.

I really enjoyed this book. I think most high school history students would simply categorize William the Conqueror as a mid evil barbarian, based on their textbook readings. The true scope of his accomplishments however, is actually rather astounding. Reading this book really made me feel as if I were there...what a difficult life it was...one uprising after another...challenges and treachery from family and close associates. I wanted to know how someone who history deemed so severe and cruel , could also do so many things noteworthy, and socially beneficial...this book fills in the blanks and is an enjoyable read.

When I started this book, I did not know it was going to be a history lesson. I absolutely am obsessed with medieval history but I need a good story behind it. This book did an excellent job of both. I got a very real sense of the players and the author made them interesting and real. I learned a great deal. There are a lot of grammatical errors, which I find annoying in books, but overall I read it in two days and I liked it. It's not for everybody tho.
