Today’s commercially available yurts largely are flexible wall units, with lattice forming the “frame” of the walls, and studs resting on an aircraft cable strung along the top of the lattice. They are lightweight, but, by that definition, are vulnerable to the elements and to wildlife. Although defined as portable, they require a full day to set up, using three or more people. Their insulation (optional) generally is Mylar bubble insulation and windows are heavy plastic. The yurt concept in this set of plans calls for rigid insulation walls, readily available materials, glass windows, standard-sized door, and a very lightweight, truly portable design. Although the yurt plan is sized for a 16-foot diameter unit, size can be scaled up or down quite readily. Total material cost generally is less than $1,500. Typically, one person can cut all the pieces needed to size in less than 40 hours. To assemble the unit requires one person and three or four hours. To disassemble takes two hours. The guide includes numerous photographs of a sample yurt being built. Also included are discussions of problems with many yurts (and solutions), ideas on plumbing, heating, interior finish and power.

Due to disabilities, I am not able to build one myself. But, if you are able, this is a very readable and comprehensive little book that will guide you step-by-step in building this hybrid yurt. The cost may be up a bit by now but it still shouldn't cost too much more. I think that anyone could do this with a little help and a modicum amount of wordworking/building talent.

The Good:

Mostly clear explanation of the building process.

An example of good design.

Inexpensive both to buy the book, and to construct the yurt.

The design can be modified for more permanent installation (though little is said about how this might be done).

The Less Good:

More photos and a few supplementary diagrams would be welcome.

Photos that are provided need to be clearer as to specifically what they are illustrating--attention to basic illustrative photography is called for.

The model presented in the book is for a 16-foot semi-portable yurt. Mention is made of the author's own 28-foot yurt in which he has lived, but nothing in the book presents how to build a yurt of any larger size. This matters because the design depends upon some very careful dimensional and angle measurements with even small errors preventing successful construction, so without numbers provided by the author, many considering the task of building a larger yurt may be put off...

Mention is made of adding services to a yurt intended for permanent, year-round or seasonal residence, but again, little detail is provided as to how these might be included. (As for founding a more permanent construction, there are a number of resources available online. This is less true for services, but still possible.)

I was super excited when ordering this book. As a homeless hobo I was keen on the idea of a "home " of some sort, someday . Waiting for it sitting on pins and needles , then eventually it arrived. I read it in a sitting and what I got out of it , is 1. A yurt would attract attention, which is usually unwelcome for homeless and weirdos, i.e people that live in yurts, tents, teepees, etc. 2. I ,and likely others can get a junk trailer and a small bit of dirt under it for what the cost of this semi solid yurt would cost . 3. One would have to have some sort of passable skills to build this, and if I had any worth while skills I would not likely need to be looking at a book on how to build a yurt, or be a hobo .The book and its instructions would likely help one to if You had the capital, the skills and more tolerance of not blending in and attracting attention than I do. The book DID sell Me on finding a easier, cheaper , and safer way than a yurt, which I am thankful it did before I tried to build it , waste time , money etc.
