"Astonishing, original....an early chapter in women's revisionary history [that] offers true eloquence resurrected from the silence of the past."―The New York Times Book Review

In dialogues with three celestial ladies, Reason, Rectitude, and Justice, Christine de Pizan (1365-ca. 1429) builds an allegorical fortified city for women using examples of the important contributions women have made to Western Civilization and arguments that prove their intellectual and moral equality to men. Earl Jeffrey Richards' acclaimed translation is used nationwide in the most eminent colleges and universities in America, from Columbia to Stanford.

Maureen Quilligan, New York Times Book Review

From the Back Cover

Christine de Pizan was born in 1365 in Venice. Her family moved to Paris three years later when her father was appointed court astrologer to King Charles V. Close ties to the royal court and her father's encouragement enabled Christine to obtain a good education, unusual for women of her time. At the age of fifteen, she married a court notary, who also fostered her learning and her literary activities. She was only twenty-five when she was widowed and left without an inheritance. With three children to support, Christine turned to writing to earn her living. From 1390 to 1429, the presumed year of her death, she wrote more than twenty works, nearly all concerned with two themes: the political life of France and the defense of women. The Book of the City of Ladies is Christine de Pizan's most eloquent expression of her feminist beliefs.

Christine de Pizan was an extraordinary writer and poet. Her books of poetry are as beautiful as any you are likely to read. Some of her poems concern the death of her husband, some are loved poems, but all are marvelous in expression and feeling. She was a woman who wrote so well as to support her entire family by herself after her husband died and left her a widow. Besides poetry she wrote a book on the art of war, and also this book, "The book of the City of Ladies," which is one of the first ever written about women running their own affairs. Christine was so successful that she is depicted in thousands of paintings illustrating women writers. This translation is a good one.

Fascinating look into the world of a most unusual - female - author written in1405 (yes, 1405), by Christine de Pizan. Translated to English in 1982. The author "... builds an allegorical fortified city for women using examples of the important contributions women have made to Western civilization and arguments that prove their intellectual and moral equality of men."

A great edition of a medieval proto-Feminist work. I highly suggest Pizan to anyone interested in History or Gender Studies. This work provides a fascinating barometer for the state of thought surrounding gender roles in Medieval Europe.

It's a fascinating insight into very early "feminist" ideology, and gives us many insights into the medieval world. It also illuminates the influential, but precarious position of upper-class ladies of the High Middle Ages.

This book will prove that history and human argument just repeat themselves in endless cycles. It has gotten me through some very long and boring waits. Your mileage may vary.

This book gives an excellent idea of what life was like for women in medieval France. Christine writes beautifully as she buids her metaphorical city.
