An extraordinary compilation of the plants used by North American native peoples for medicine, food, fiber, dye, and a host of other things. Anthropologist Daniel E. Moerman has devoted 25 years to the task of gathering together the accumulated ethnobotanical knowledge on more than 4000 plants. More than 44,000 uses for these plants by various tribes are documented here. This is undoubtedly the most massive ethnobotanical survey ever undertaken, preserving an enormous store of information for the future.

Excellent references multiple ways of indexing and definitely recommend!
This book is an amazing reference tool! Not only is there a catalog of plants but there are other ways of listing as well. The information has been broken down by each tribe and indexed by usage. There is also an index of common names and synonyms. There are not photographs or drawings of each plant. While that would also have been amazing to have today. The amount of time and effort poured into this book is beyond compare. What is in this reference will make finding photographs or drawings later much easier if or when there is a need. I am very thankful that I decided to purchase this hardcover book because it is worth it. There are 927 pages so keep in mind this is not a light read but a very informative one. My shipment arrived on Time but the way it was boxed caused one corner to become slightly creased. Other than this I am very happy and I will definitely recommend to others.

Moerman started working on compiling the information for this book in the 1970's during his doctorate research. This book is the product of decades of careful research and notetaking, and includes a wealth of information on how Indigenous Americans used plants, not only for foods and medicines but also for construction purposes. The American pawpaw, for example, was used by the Cherokee not only as a food but also to make rope and cord from the bark of the tree. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in plants or Indigenous American studies.

This book arrived in mint condition. It's a huge encyclopedia of plants native to my area. I am a hands-on eco conservationist and I'm going to use this book every single on-season week, I just know it.

Hard read, plants are listed alphabetically by scientific name. Great info provided just have to look up in back common name to find specific plant I am researching.

This is THE reference on the subject; an incredible tool for research, and I recommend it highly. My only complaint, and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5, is that I would have liked to have seen the Native names for the plants listed, and it seems to me that that would be appropriate for this work.

I can really appreciate this book because I know how much work went into creating it. Although I wish there was more detail about how the plants were used I'm able to cross reference other books to get the information I need. The layout of the book gives you the ability to attack a given plant inquiry from many different perspectives. For example, you can decide you want to know what a particular group of Native Americans did with a specific plant and look up the plant in the main body of the book (Catalog of Plants) and it will summarize the uses by the following categories: drug, food, fiber, dye & other. Then within each of these categories each group of Native American tribe is named with the uses if it applies to them. All of the uses are referenced to the literature (bibliography) giving you the ablity to obtain original articles if desired. From another perspective, you can have an interest in the Cherokee and go to the section "Index of Tribes" which will allow you to look up each of the many specific subcategories of the main categories mentioned above and get the use of specific plants such as under, Drug, the analgesic plant uses. It also contains a list of the tribes as well as their native regions which includes tribes from the U.S. (Alaska & Hawaii too), Canada, Greenland and some of Mexico (Northern). There is also an index of usages that is very handy. Each usage category will have an alphabetical list of plant genera followed by the tribe name(s) that used these genera. If you have any interest in Native American Ethnobotany then this book is of value and I highly recommend it for Native Americans, botanists, foragers and others interested in the disappearing knowledge of these amazing cultures.

Unfortunately the book sent is in terrible condition. The back is completely broken with pages start falling off. The front cover is also damaged and look used. This condition was not advertised anywhere in the product description. For the price paid, this should not happen.
Also, it seems there is no way to contact the seller to replace the product - only option to return, which I am seriously considering. Otherwise, the book content is amazing, but aimed at scientists and researchers rather than average oerson interested in ethnic naturopathyv sing native plants.
