Discovering Eris: The Symbolism and Significance of a New Planetary Archetype Paperback – May 15, 2012
Purchase options and add-ons
In astrology, each planet in our solar system is symbolically associated with specific archetypes, characteristics, themes and patterns in human experience. The discovery in 2005 of Eris -- a dwarf planet beyond Pluto -- was therefore an event of great significance for astrology as well as astronomy.
In this unique book, Keiron Le Grice considers the astrological significance of Eris. How, he asks, can we determine Eris's meaning? What archetypal themes is it associated with? In what ways might the myths of Eris, the Greek goddess of strife, be relevant to the astrological meaning? What can Eris's discovery tell us about the evolutionary challenges we now face?
Drawing on a wide variety of perspectives -- including mythology, ecology, religion, history, philosophy and Jungian psychology -- Le Grice carefully constructs a multi-faceted picture of Eris's possible meaning, helping to illuminate the unprecedented events of our time and providing clues to our possible future directions.

Editorial Reviews
Review
'This book is a pleasure to read because it is so well-written. It has an elegance of style, lucid rationality of argument and the breadth of historical, philosophical and pycho-spiritual understanding... A must for your bookshelf!'
– The Astrological Journal
'Written in a style both accessible and engaging, Le Grice displays an impressive multi-disciplinary reach, drawing with equal competence from the sciences and psychology, from mythology and world history. Though focused on the meaning of Eris, the book also serves as a lucid introduction to the new field of archetypal cosmology. At the same time, given his central hypothesis, the reader is presented with a series of illuminating insights having to do with the evolution of consciousness and this current, critical phase of the Planetary Era.'
– Sean Kelly, author of Coming Home: The Birth and Transformation of the Planetary Era

The author also makes a strong argument for the archetype's relationship to the sign of libra
At the same time, I am admittedly in favor of the minor planet Sedna as the bearer of this archetype (she hasn't been this close to the sun since the end of the mini ice age that sparked agriculture, an event of a magnitude worthy of this archetype) and wasn't convinced that this archetype is necessarily resonant with eris -- though birth charts and transits are cited that involve eris and this archetype, the accompanying analyses were insufficient for me.
But regardless, this book is a great read for its cogency and articulation of a timely archetype worth being on the mind of more people.
I had already much enjoyed "The Archetypal Cosmos", by the same author.
This time, Keiron Le Grice guides us into the discovery of a new dwarf planet (like Pluto), Eris, goddess of strife, feud and discord.
His book his both amazingly clear and extremely rich : KLG taps into mythology, astrology, philosophy and much more, to write a book of a unique depth and scope, that goes much further than just shedding light on a new planet, or explaining what the astrological significance of this planet might be.
This book is an absolute MUST READ for any astrologer, on the one hand, but also for many people interested in archetypes, in mythology, or - more generally speaking - in better understanding mankind, our present collective predicament and what we might learn from the stars.
I can't recommend it enough !
Were I to write this comment in my mother tongue (French), I would go much greater length to explain in details all you can expect to find in these pages, but I do hope that these few lines will be enough to trigger other readers' interest.

The conclusions he reaches are well reasoned but reassuringly tentative, acknowledging that mapping a new archetype is the start of a long process of research.
The book begins with a brief and clear introduction to the principles of archetypes, astrology and the synchronicity between planetary positions and global currents and events. There is discussion as to why these theories should be taken seriously and consideration of psychological theorists such as Jung and Washburn. A detailed exploration of themes associated with Eris examines myth and Eris world transits with other planets.
Eris seems to hold an archetypal meaning of strife, opposition and discord, which can be understood on a number of different levels but holds the promise of a working through and processing of these principles towards a more whole and harmonious version of ourselves and indeed humanity.
