Britannia, 45 AD: In the shadow of Stonehenge, Vespasian's brother, Sabinus, is captured by druids. The druids want to offer a potent sacrifice to their gods - not just one Roman Legate, but two. They know that Vespasian will come after his brother, and they plan to sacrifice the siblings on a summer's day. But to whom will they be making this sacrifice? What were the gods of this land before the Celts came? Only the druids still hold the secret and it is one of pure evil. Vespasian must strive to save his brother whilst completing the conquest of the haunted isle, before he is drawn inexorably back to Rome and the heart of Imperial politics. Claudius' three freedmen remain at the locus of power. As Messalina's time as Empress comes to a bloody end, the three freedmen each back a different mistress. But which woman will be victorious? And at what price for Vespasian?

I've liked "all" of the books in the series so far...Messalina was one sick, twisted chick, as was Caligula in the previous book...I love Roman history and studied Classics in college...I have one major issue with this series and the Simon Scarrow series which will sound a bit "ethnocentric"...what is the deal with English writers "Anglifying" these books??? Examples...bollocks, "get stuck in", lads, "right then..." Romans did not use these terms, I've checked the etymology of these words and they were not used "back in the day..." The one that really gets me is the fascination with Wellington's apparent quote at Waterloo to Maitland, "Up and At Them..." Is Wellington a reincarnate from the Roman empire??? And the use of the word "homosexuality" really struck me as this is a late 19th century construct...To put in perspective...it would be like an "American" writer from Texas using the word "y'all" in books on Rome...Imagine Vespasian telling Sabinus and Magnus, whom I absolutely love, "y'all come on and "get stuck in..." I hope the author sees this, though I doubt he will...I have no issue with how they speak "across the pond"...I just don't think modern day language should be used...It would be again like Vespasian saying, "It is was it is..." I think the Spartacus series used "proper" Roman language of the time and I hope more authors would make an effort to do the same...And please, for God's sake, leave Wellington out of Roman fictional history...Cheers

I suppose that I am a 'Roman History Addict', from Graves to 5 years of Masters studies in historical exploration. The creativity in this book was both colourful and fantastic. I paid for this release 4 months ahead. As a musician and composer I tend to be more critical because we are all working on such subjective matters. The vilification of Messalina I have read before, Fabbri is brilliant, even shocking. Read this book, the first is even more amazing - truly, worth reading

Another thrilling episode in the life of the future emperor. Vespasian taken prisoner in Armenia. Paints a sorrowful picture of the Claudian reign and of the character of Claudius himself.

A very well written continuation, maybe a bit too much fantasy sometimes for my taste - but the author kept me glued to the pages and I already bought the next sequel!

Fabbri is a great historical fiction writer all of his books are exciting.

Thirty-six year old Vespasian (legionary general) scraps with Britons and Druids and learns how to squeeze a Roman Buck out of enemies in Rome. A very un-Robert Graveslike Emperor Claudius clings to the imperial throne while his nymphomaniac wife, Messalina, parties like she's going to live forever (she won't)..
As always, author Robert Fabbri writes terrific battle scenes and has a good feel for history. There are a lot of mystic and supernatural doings brought in when Vespasian is in conflict with Druids which really didn't work as well as the rest of the tale. Not the best book in this series, but generally pretty entertaining.

A very enjoyable read. Just love the style of Fabbri, and as an Archaeologist and Historian, the tales that Robert has woven around Vespasian are totally believable.

life in the Roman Court was anything but proper - decadence abounded. Two thousand years later we can see "some progress" in the conduct of those that govern us. At least the summary executions, etc are no longer with us. As a story it was a good read. as a history it was not.

The depravity, murdering and apparent lack of any order to Roman society as depicted by Fabbri makes you wonder how that empire survived for so long. However, Vespasian's ongoing story fits the mould and is well written.

Bel romanzo scritto bene, la storia mi piace, e forse perché legato ad un personaggio vero, forse per Fabbri e bravo non si sta perdendo come capita agli autori di altre saghe, vero Martin?

this Vespasian saga is one of the best historical novels I've read. The documentation is masterfully exploited to present us with the heady plotting and intriguing of the power circles, breathtaking battles, dark cults, mouth-watering debauchery, all in the permanent intimacy of one of the grandest figures Rome will bequeath to history. A very entertaining read for all Rome-lovers, who will enjoy the tasty liberties taken by the author for the sake of an exciting narration, as well as the enactment of well known pages of history. Masterful.

Following Vespasian into Brittania has been informative, gripping, at times sickening, but truly awe inspiring.

Even though parts of it (the occult bits) have me saying, aye right, there is no denying that this account leaves you wanting more. You have to read the books in order, or you will miss references but if this is the first book in the series you stumble on, go back to the start you will not be disappointed.

The history is awesome, ok fictional..ish, but it could be true. It's gruesome at times some bits had me wincing. If I didn't have to work and sleep I would have read this in one sitting.

My usual genre is detective/ murder mystery...but this is better.

I love the relationship between Marcus and Vespasian, a real romance!!

I've twittered on enough, what you waiting on?
