An Introduction to Biblical Ethics: Walking in the Way of Wisdom Hardcover – June 5, 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
What should we do or not do? What attitudes, behavior and qualities are good? Can we be good without God? What is the highest good, the purpose of human existence? These are the questions the study of ethics seeks to answer.Unlike many approaches to ethics, this book foundationally turns to Scripture, going only as far as Scripture itself goes. The result is an overview of biblical ethics that not only addresses the life of love and wisdom to be lived out by Christians as virtuous individuals, but also as Christians in community, in society and in a world of God?s creation. Key preliminary considerations of love, law, sin and virtue are given their due in this thoroughly revised and updated text. The bulk of the work is then organized around the Ten Commandments and ethical themes springing from them―loving God (commandments 1-4) and loving others (commandments 6-10). This new edition includes added material on
- ethical alternatives such as relativism, social contract, utilitarianism and evolutionary ethics
- the seven deadly sins as well as the cardinal virtues vs. theological virtues
- end-of-life ethics, stem-cell research, animal rights, sexuality, genetics and technology, and other bioethical issues such as plastic surgery and surrogate motherhood
- technology and its depersonalizing effects as well as helping the poor
- the church?s engagement in society and how Christians can make a difference in the media.
McQuilkin and Copan stay focused on how we are fulfilling the purposes of God for our lives―a will that is for our good and our well-being. This comprehensive study is the place to begin on the journey of living wisely, faithfully and obediently.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"An Introduction to Biblical Ethics combines the winsome wisdom of Robertson McQuilkin, one of the sage professors of Christian ethics, with the penetrating rigor of Paul Copan, one of the premier thinkers of today. What could be better than this?" -- C. Ben Mitchell, Graves Professor of Moral Philosophy, Union University, Jackson, Tennessee
"A first-rate discussion of ethics from a Christian worldview. I'm very glad to see Robertson McQuilkin's work be updated by such a capable scholar as Paul Copan." -- Scott B. Rae, dean of faculty, Talbot School of Theology, Biola University
"Although as a Catholic I part ways with the authors on a couple of issues―such as birth control and the use of images―this is an amazingly careful piece of work. Robertson McQuilkin and Paul Copan offer to their readers a clear and compelling account of an evangelical Protestant understanding of biblical ethics, one from which those outside this tradition can learn much. What makes this book historically interesting is that it is a third edition of a classic originally authored by McQuilkin, a legendary figure in American evangelicalism and a pioneer in the field of contemporary biblical ethics. But now it has been revised and authored in collaboration with one of the most prolific Christian philosophers alive today, Copan. As one would expect, this rare combination of talents makes for an important contribution to the study of ethics." -- Francis J. Beckwith, professor of philosophy and church-state studies, and codirector of the program on philosophical studies of religion, Baylor University
"Insight and wisdom abound in this volume. Ethical instruction flows in a torrent of theologically informed, biblical exposition. I found myself constantly expecting to critique the book for being much wider than it is deep, but I was routinely surprised by the depth of insight the volume provides. Just as the Mississippi River proves that a river can be both deep and wide, so, too, this text proves that a single volume can display the breadth of biblical ethics with theological depth." -- Greg Cochran, Books at a Glance, December 28, 2015

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2015This book is awesome. It is very readable. The book does not go into a lot of philosophical jargon. This book explains what it means to live as a saved person in the twenty-first century. This is an awesome book to read with the Gospels and the entire New Testament. It can work as a commentary in a sense. I love reading it along side the Gospels. It is like an exposition of the Lord Jesus Christ's Sermon on the mount. It has also been a great resource for me in preparing Sunday school lessons. I have been teaching on the theme of being a Biblical disciple. I highly recommend this book for those who seek to know what it means to love God and neighbor. I really recommend this book for everyone. However, If you are looking for a book that goes into more philosophical detail, you should pick up Norman Geislers Christian Ethics
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2017This book is a great tool for a beginning study of Biblical ethics. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I am in an accelerated class which is using it as a textbook. I have had to read all 600 pages in 4 weeks, including Christmas and New Year's. I hope to reread it at a slower pace as my devotional after the class is over. There is so much good meat in this book which I think I will need to read several times to let it all sink in. I look forward to growing as I chew on it at a slower pace. I highly recommend.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2015arrived on time and was as described.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2015Good introduction to a variety of issues, but lacking depth. This is only meant to be an introduction so I don't want to be too critical; however, there should be more footnotes and interaction with other views. Regardless I'm glad I read it, but I probably won't reference it much in the future.

A very well written introduction to Ethics. It's also great to see two scholars who respect each other and don't always agree.
