Purchase options and add-ons

Jonathan Bardon covers all the obvious things: the invasions, battles, development of towns and cities, the Reformation, the Georgian era, the Famine, rebellions and resistance, the difference of Ulster, partition, the twentieth century. What makes his book so valuable, however, are the quirky subjects he chooses to illustrate how history really works: the great winter freeze of 1740 and the famine that followed; crime and dueling; an emigrant voyage; evictions. These episodes get behind the historical headlines to give a glimpse of past realities that might otherwise be lost to view. The author has retained the original episodic structure of the radio programs. The result is a marvelous mosaic of the Irish past, delivered with clarity and narrative skill.

A very comprehensive book written with passion & obvious knowledge. Not as much detail in some areas which interest me but never the less entertaining. The book would have needed to be twice as long to give more detail - which is unreasonable. People with no previous knowledge of the history of Ireland will come away with a reasonable grounding of how the Irish got to where they are today. There are many, many other books which will fill in the detail.

The format of 250 episodes lent a kind of dramatic flow to the data presented without sensationalizing or compromising scholarship. I found myself caring about what I read - begining the book while on a resesrch tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Excellent introduction to Irish history. I like the way that it was presented in easy to read, manageable, bite-sized pieces.

This is a very readable, comprehensive history of Ireland. Each chapter is short, self contained and can be read in around 5 minutes, which makes it ideal for those times when you need a quick read without too far to backtrack if you should lose the continuity.

I would have rated this much higher except for the lack of maps. It would be really helpful if each chapter could be prefaced with a map showing the area of interest.

This book was very helpful in understanding the history of Ireland, however it did seem a bit biased. I felt it was taking the side of the Protestants while giving little value to the native Irish and the Roman Catholics. I liked reading short vignettes instead of long chapters as it was sometimes necessary to re-read the information to get a clear comprehension.

This book describes the history of Ireland in 250 segments which are mostly 1-2 pages. This makes it easy to read and you aren't overwhelmed by the flow of history. In spite of this, you gain a healthy understanding of the history as you progress through the book. Small doses of information make if easier to visualize the external forces of England and Europe that impacted Ireland and its history. Recommend this book for a better understanding of what caused Ireland to be formed as we know it today.

I really enjoyed reading this book. In spite of being designed in bite-size chunks the narrative is still easy to follow. It gives much detail about the land of my ancestors that I am ashamed to say I did not know. I thoroughly recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Page Navigation is Messed Up
Reviewed in Canada on June 26, 2022
I loved the writing and wealth of fact but, in the Kindle version, once you get into the latter chapters (around 225 or so), empty pages appear between chapters and attempts to navigate to the next chapter throw you back hundreds of pages. Attempts to tap the "Go Back to Page xxx" icon doesn't work. Bookmarks also fail. This makes reading the last chapters nearly impossible. Please fix this frustrating problem!
