I used this book repeatedly to assist me in understanding the complicated Austrian politics in the late French Revolution and early Napoleonic Wars. It is very fine indeed.

I liked the balance this historical biography brought to the subject. It was compelling to understand the specific intrigues at that highest level of diplomatic relations between allies against Napoleon, and the rivalries that made their unity a challenge, that diminished their capacity to repel the French War machine. I gain far more respect for the older regimes, in their attempts to hold back and preserve the balance of power within Europe at the time which was rent asunder by the combatants.
