From influential British historian A.J.P. Taylor, a reprint of his influential text The Origins of the Second World War. Controversial for his thesis that Hitler was an opportunist with no thorough plan, The Origins of the Second World War is an extensive exploration of the international politics and foreign policy that lead up to the one of the bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century.

Published in 1961,
The Origins of the Second World War is a classic of modern history. A.J.P. Taylor's years of research helped change the long-accepted view that Adolf Hitler had wanted and planned in detail for a war. With clear and relatable prose, Taylor depicts the diplomatic mistakes from both the Allied and Axis powers that lead to the outbreak of World War II. A groundbreaking work, The Origins of the Second World War "is an almost faultless masterpiece, perfectly proportioned, perfectly controlled" (The Observer).

A book about Mother Britain and her rowdy neighbors.
3 Stars
A book about Mother Britain and her rowdy neighbors.
The book's copyright dates to 1961, so it would not be fair to judge it with the benefit of 2022 hindsight. However, the author insisted on making a number of fantastical claims such as: "...the way out of a depression is to increase government spending." (p61), "At the close of 1918... Germany had been defeated without Russia's assistance... predominantly - if not exclusively - on the Western front." (p21), and "...the Soviet statesmen... slipped into the delusion that Hitler would keep his word." (p263, in reference to the Molotov/Ribbentrop pact of 1939).In fact, I disagree with the author on many of his claims, speculations, and conclusions. HOWEVER, I would nonetheless say that this book is worth reading. The author takes the reader through a play-by-play analysis of the surface-level political games that were played in Europe from the end of WW1 right up to September of 1939, when Britain and France declared war on Germany. The book is perhaps a more valuble read for non-Westerners; because many Western myths and exaggerations that were around in the 20th century, have largely persisted into the 21st. And this book encapsulates many of these myths and exaggerations into one volume. It will help you to better understand the "Western perspective."If you wish to better understand the WW1-WW2 time-period from the Russian perspective, I urge you to watch 3 Russian-made documentaries on the youtube channel StarMediaEN.1. In what is often considered the most controversial of his many scholarly books, this exploration into the putative causes of World War Two by renowned British historian A.P.J. Taylor caused great controversy and discussion when published in the sixties. I remember as a college student the arguments regarding his scholarship, sympathies for Hitler, and somewhat simplistic approach in trying to mount an ardent and convincing argument demolishing the conventional wisdom holding that one man, Adolph Hitler, was uniquely responsible for the outbreak of the most horrific conflict in modern history. Amazingly, upon rereading this wonderfully written, entertaining, and erudite tome again recently, one walks away still impressed by his ability to marshal a wall of facts that seemingly support his incendiary ideas.
On the surface Taylor's general thesis that, given the poorly constructed and patently unfair peace treaty levied by the victorious allies onto Germany at Versailles, the war was inevitable is well-taken, as is his contention that many besides Hitler and the Nazis were responsible for the increased tensions and resort to force of arms in the 1930s both through acts of commission such as the peace treaty, and also through acts of omission, in particular referring to the failure of any of the allies to act responsibly and thoughtfully to the provocative acts of rearming Germany. Certainly the policies of appeasement, willful ignorance, and benign neglect of the international agreements so painfully wrought with the blood of millions of soldiers on the battlefields of France in WWI led to such a level of indifference and anarchy that it became an ideal environment for the incubation of the kinds of tyranny that arose in Italy, Germany, and Spain in those years. As Taylor points out, the fact of this indifference did much to sow the seeds of what would be reaped so painfully later.
Yet while any thoughtful student will heartily agree that the whole western world's blind indifference and acts of craven appeasement to the rising tides of murder and mayhem did much to encourage the excesses and bloody dreams of the Nazis, one finds it more difficult to excuse or ignore Hitler's own role in steering Germany toward confrontation and fatal conflict with all of its European neighbors. While one can argue that he never intended a war against England and France, that he misunderstood their resolve regarding Poland and the declaration of war against Germany, it is simply silly to argue that Hitler was somehow not directly responsible for the planning and execution of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union and the quite systematic murder of its people. Thus, while in arguing for the wider sharing of blame for the possibility of war existing Taylor does a marvelous job, he fails miserably in trying to explain the specifics of the war, since Hitler said all along the reason for the war was to establish an area of expansion for the German people, or "living room", in the wheat-belt of Russia called the Ukraine.
Hitler intended from the beginning to systematically exterminate all the indigenous people living in the Ukraine (and elsewhere in Russia) through a delberate campaign of murder, slave labor, and starvation. He considered the Russian people subhumans he would smash and exterminate. Similarly, the so called "Final Solution", while not necessarily the product of the kind of systematic planning many have attributed to it, was in the end a masterfully executed campaign of deliberate genocide against Jews, gypsies, and other non-Aryans. This is a fascinating book, and Taylor argues articulately for the idea that others besides Hitler deserve a portion of the blame for what unfolded into the largest conflict in the history of the world. His notion that one can more fully comprehend Hitler's actions when viewing them in the context of a poisonously dangerous world environment in which others failed to act humanely and responsibly is both sophisticated and well supported. Yet he oversimplifies certain aspects of the story, and seems to be overly sympathetic to Hitler and the National Socialists in doing so. This book is a wonderful read, and it is a pleasure to be in the presence of such a marvelous intellect, even if I do not agree with the overall thesis he is arguing for. Enjoy!

Bought this book as replacement to replace a thoroughly used up paperback copy. This book was required textbook for a college history course many years ago. I must have re-read that book twenty or more times over the years to the point it basically gave up the ghost. I wanted a hardback replacement that could hold up, and this one is a quality edition at a really good price. Books like these are important because they were written by people that witnessed the times, that value facts over narratives and that have no agenda other than historical documentation. Recommend.

In our days,Munich and Appeasement are the dirty words of Political Science that describe the Diplomatic and Political failure of the Western Democracies to check Hitler and Mussolini and prevent the Second World War
The victorious allies at the end of 2 WW created a convenient myth: Hitler and the Nazi party were the source of all evil and the sole rsponsible for the war. This was widely accepted in the 50's.
It took the courage of A J P Taylor, the great British Historian ,that thrived in controversy,to debunk this myth, not by exculpating Hitler but by indicting also the Statesmen of theWestern Democracies who tolerated, encouraged ,feared and retreated from Hitler's aggressive mix of of guile, lies and threats and accepted even the second rater Mussolini as a Great Power so as to keep Peace ,avoid military expenditure and have a bulwark against Bolshevism.
Taylor demonstrates starkly the inadequacy of the Western Ruling Elites, their unwillingness to even contemplate about military measures against Nazi Germany in the case of the occupation of Austria the forcing of Czechoslovakia to National suicide, the shame of abandoning democratic Spain to Hitler Mussolini and Stalin and the whole imbroglio of Poland who understood nothing of the great lurking danger in her belief that she was a Great power when simultaneously GB and France tried to both guarantee Poland and have her yield to Hitler
Since Taylor wrote the book, being the pathfinder, his points were accepted as part of the mainstream of 2ww historiography and many Historians expanded on his findings and conclusions. Those have since been improved, modified and even sometimes found wrong and changed since enormous amounts of data have been made available after the publication of this book until today, particularly the Soviet archives
This book with all its flaws remains of monumental and seminal importance for its clarity ,honesty and the presentation of hard and unpalatable truths. It is also written in a stylish prose, humorous and at times sarcastic.
The more profound conclusion of this book is the implication that Germany as the biggest and most advanced Country in Europe was destined to become Great again and that this was the policy and the efforts of all her Statesmen from Versailles to Hitler.Mutatis mutandis we witness the same dominance again in our days in the Economic and Political spheres after her reunification and we also see all the other Statesmen of Europe weak, timid and short sighted to just observe if not help Germany in her way to European Dominance.
AJP Taylor's contribution to European History will be long lasting.
