Medea is among the most notorious women in the canon of Greek tragedy: a woman scorned who sacrifices her own children to her jealous rage. In her gripping new novel, Christa Wolf expands this myth, revealing a fiercely independent woman ensnared in a brutal political battle.

Medea, driven by her conscience to leave her corrupt homeland, arrives in Corinth with her husband, the hero Jason. He is welcomed, but she is branded the outsider—and then she discovers the appalling secret behind the king's claim to power. Unwilling to ignore the horrifying truth about the state, she becomes a threat to the king and his ruthless advisors. Then abandoned by Jason and made a public scapegoat, she is reviled as a witch and a murderess.

Long a sharp-eyed political observer, Christa Wolf transforms this ancient tale into a startlingly relevant commentary on our times. Possessed of the enduring truths so treasured in the classics, and yet with a thoroughly contemporary spin, her
Medea is a stunningly perceptive and probingly honest work of fiction.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Christa Wolf was a famed writer and literary critic of the former East Germany. She studied at the University of Jena and the University of Leipzig and worked as an editor until the 1963 publication of her first novel, Divided Heaven, which marked the beginning of her career as a writer. Her works, which reflect the ideological and political turmoil of living in a Nazi- and later communist-controlled Germany, include The Quest for Christa T., Medea, Patterns of Childhood, No Place on Earth, and the contentious novella What Remains. Despite a career fraught with controversy, she was the recipient of many prizes both before and after the war, including the Heinrich Mann Prize, Georg Büchner Prize, Elisabeth Langgässer Prize, and the first Deutscher Bücherpreis (German Book Prize). She died in 2011.

Looks like this book took quite a fall before I got it. The spine is torn at the bottom and the edges are scratched in some places. It looks okay on the inside though.

Medea is a timeless story of a woman in a thankless man's world: a non-citizen in a society that rewards its own with civility and civilization. Euripedes' story made her fearsome, Ms. Wolf made her human.

This is not the original story of Jason and the Golden Fleece. It is told from Medea's perspective and focuses on her struggle with her love for Jason and how she dealt with him betraying her.

This book is very interesting but I think it lingers a bit at the end. Not bad though. 7/10 thanks

It is powerful and beautiful

What a wonderful addition to the Jason/Golden Fleece/Argonaut legend. Finally, someone of great skill gives a voice to one of the most mysterious women of ancient literature. Medea has been much maligned by others, but Christa Wolf redeems her. The narrative is beautifully conceived and even in translation has a lyrical, poetic quality. The plot is compelling and executed with grace.

The story focuses on Jason and Medea's life in exile at Corinth, but it clearly shares an atmosphere similar to the oppression and turmoil of post WWII eastern Europe - people ruled by fear, suspicion, and a sense of helplessness. Great Art!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Retelling Of A Misunderstood Character
Reviewed in Canada on February 26, 2023
This book was well written + captivating. Even though it is a short book, I highly recommend you take the time to read it and savor it. It has multiple POV's + it paints the situation in Corinth in a dismal, dangerous time and at the heart of it is Medea. In the classical myths, she's seen as a seductress, a woman obsessed with Jason who helps him with the Golden Fleece but this book is one I think probably might better describe what could have possible happened. Christa Wolf's retelling is a powerful tale that tells of how power, the misuse of power + those greedy for it can snuff out + destroy someone's reputation. How people can be so overwrought with anxiety that they seek to blame anyone different for suffering no one has control over. The author paints an image of how powerful scapegoating can be + how some people with malevolent intentions can do almost anything to destroy someone innocent just for their quest for power and security. And the spin the author takes in why Medea left Colchis + the secret reason for her brother's murder + that it wasn't her doing. Or that the same thing was happening in Corinth + at the heart of it was really not wanting to relinquish leadership simply out of greed. There are some powerful messages in this book. This book will not disappoint you. It will make you look at the myth in a much wider, perspective. I really enjoyed reading this retelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars Texto fundamental
Reviewed in Brazil on December 9, 2019
