Plautus was the single greatest influence on Western comedy. In fact, Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors and Moliere's the Miser are two subsequent classics directly based on Plautine originals. Plautus himself borrowed from the Greeks, but his jokes, rapid dialogue, bawdy humor, and irreverent characterizations are the original work of an undisputed genius. The comedies printed here show him at his best, and Professor Segal's translations keep their fast, rollicking pace intact, making these the most readable and actable versions available. This volume includes, The Braggart Soldier, e Brothers Menaechmus, The Haunted House, and The Pot of Gold.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`These translations are unrivalled in English. The dialogue is brisk, puns and alliterative strings trip from [Segal's] pen with an abandon that rivals the master himself, and the lyrics really ache to be sung. It is great theatre!' Professor Walter Moskalew, Classics Department, Ball State University`Enormously playable . . . scrupulously accurate.' Dr Richard C. Beacham, Department of Theatre Studies, University of Warwick

Good condition for its age. Much cheaper than new

I didn't read all 4 comedies...yet...but nearing the 3rd. It is a good, safe bet that literal fundies will hate this. Politicians will learn a few things fr/ it too. This guy was far ahead of his time. Just like Thomas Paine eh. TV & movies virtually copy the story-lines fr/ it word by word. ;(. Goes to show that writers today don't have much imagination eh.

Segal's translation has great wit. It does a great job at capturing at least some of the wit of Plautus' comedies. He does a great job of translating the Latin. I heartily recommend this translation.

a worthwhile read for anyone. but look into it if your taking a college course on roman comedy especially though. it's not a quick read but a good one. the "brothers Menaechmus" stays the truest to roman comedy forn with the five staple characters all in there. not for those wiht short attention spans.

Plautus is the MASTER of comedy. He is to comedy as Plato was to philosophy -- after Plautus, every thing in comedy is a footnote to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed reading these plays
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 1, 2017
I really enjoyed reading these plays, particularly the The Swaggering Soldier. As a modern reader, you don't necessarily need to know much about Roman society to find Plautus' characters amusing, or his stories entertaining. That being said, the introduction by the translator is very helpful when trying to understand the cultural and societal context in which these plays were written, as well as some of the overarching themes. The notes at the back are similarly useful, and the translation of the Latin gives a flavour of the wordplay and punning that Plautus was fond of. Worth a read!
