Henry V (Penguin Monarchs) Paperback – December 1, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
The acclaimed Penguin Monarchs series: short, fresh, expert accounts of England's rulers - now in paperback
Henry V's invasion of France, in August 1415, represented a huge gamble. As heir to the throne, he had been a failure, cast into the political wilderness amid rumours that he planned to depose his father. Despite a complete change of character as king - founding monasteries, persecuting heretics, and enforcing the law to its extremes - little had gone right since. He was insecure in his kingdom, his reputation low. On the eve of his departure for France, he uncovered a plot by some of his closest associates to remove him from power.
Agincourt was a battle that Henry should not have won - but he did, and the rest is history. Within five years, he was heir to the throne of France. In this vivid new interpretation, Anne Curry explores how Henry's hyperactive efforts to expunge his past failures, and his experience of crisis - which threatened to ruin everything he had struggled to achieve - defined his kingship, and how his astonishing success at Agincourt transformed his standing in the eyes of his contemporaries, and of all generations to come.

Much like the battle scar on his cheek, the legacy of Henry V has been scarred by fiction and selective reporting. The real Henry V continues to elude us. Anne Curry shines a light on him, showing us a more complicated and troubled man than any of his namesakes, including his father.
If there is any moral to be found in his tale, it's that we're not meant to understand him nor hail him as a hero (though his determination and military prowess does merit admiration) or swing the pendulum the other way and condemn him for being yet another medieval warlord seeking glory for himself and his kingdom. We can condemn his actions and criticize his taciturn nature without painting him with broad villainous strokes in the name of 'fairness'. Rather, this is an appeal to reason and for objectivity when it comes to Henry V and all the other players involved in this violent and backstabbing battlefield which Henry willingly thrust himself in.

This is another volume from the prestigious Penguin Monarchs series which tells the story of King Henry V, one of the most successful kings in England's long history. Of course the book explores Henry as the mythical warrior king who conquered France through a series of wars which culminated in his famous victory at Agincourt in 1415.This is certainly not Shakespeare and Henry's elusive personality is vividly brought to life by author Anne Curry, an expert in fifteenth century history, in all of her short chapters. She also explores Henry's love of music and his excessive piety which shaped so many of his actions and helped him fight the wars in France which made him so famous and powerful as a warrior king.
She also explores his turbulent relationship with his invalid father King Henry IV as Prince of Wales. She also narrates his marriage to the French Princess Katherine of Valois and his subsequent taking of the French Crown. However, Henry did not live to enjoy his victory as he died from dysentery in 1422 at the age of just 35. Nevertheless, his achievements are unrivalled amidst the long panoply of English Monarchs and his glory is unequalled in almost a thousand years of kingship. I thoroughly recommend this lively and erudite book written in a neat and modern style to appeal to both historian and general reader alike. Its a gem of alitle book and I would urge Amazon customers to buy it now!
ich he triumphed because of his famous victory at Agincourt in 1415. But this book also explores all of Henry's short life including his love of music and his ardent piety as a leading advocate of the Roman Catholic church which undoubtedly inspired him to all of his historic triumphs and battles in his action packed nine year reign. Author Anne Curry, a leading historian of the period, also explores his dramatic and turbulent relationship with his invalid father King Henry IV and his triumphal marriage to the French Princess, Katherine of Valois which ultimately won him the throne of France. This honest and refreshing tale is neatly summed up chron
